Ash wood is ring porous, which means that the annual growth rings in its youth are detached and significantly bigger than the annual rings developed during its more mature period. It is a light wood type with colors ranging from white-ish to yellow and pink. It a very widely used furniture wood as carpenters love the versatility of this wood type. Especially Scandinavian design has a weakness for ash wood and we tend to agree!
Maple wood is a lightly figured wood with whiteish color. The sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) has a yellowish touch whereas the Norway maple (Acer platanoides) is more redish-pink. Both types are available in our forest. Maple wood has great characteristics as furniture wood and combines impressive stability and flexibility at the same time. Maple wood furniture always has an very calm aura and continues to impress with its modern feel. The wood type is extremely well adapted for post-treatment with premium oils as well as different methods of etching. We love maple wood with our special white oil treatment.
A premium wood type that is carefully cultivated in our region in the North of Vienna. It is visually diverse and has a very lively figure. The “heartwood” is lucid and honey-colored to light brown. It tends to darken through sunlight turning into darker brown tones. Oak is one the toughest hardwoods around and has impressive longevity. Through our forest we can provide common oak (quercus robur), sessile oak (quercus patraea) as well as American red oak (quercus rubrar), each with its own characteristics and subtleties. Oak wood is also very suitable for post-treatment with premium oils which allow us to highlight the natural expressions of the wood type.
As the name already suggests, red oak has a reddish tone and a lively and very interesting grain. Compared to regular or „white“ oak wood, the tone can be compared to the color of american cherry wood. This makes red oak a less expensive alternative to cherry. Of course this beautiful wood has the exact same properties than „white“ oak. It has the same density, hardness and its surface can be treated with any kind of oil or wax. We especially recommend a colorless oil finish to bring out the warm red tone.
The european walnut tree spread from mediterranean countries to central europe during the times of the Roman Empire.For many years now walnut wood has been a preferred choice for furniture. We can provide regular walnut (Juglans regia) and black walnut (Juglans nigra). Both wood types have a darkish brown color and an extremely fine figure. American walnut is not as heavy and hard as oak wood, whereas European walnut is one of the hardest wood types that exist. We recommend post-treatment with natural oils.
The wood of the Black walnut tree (Juglans nigra) is a favorite amongst american mid century furniture aficionados and design lovers. Juglans Nigra has its origins on the East Coast of the United States but from 1900 on these impressive trees were also planted in some regions around river Rhine and the Danube. They have formed significant tree stocks in our region too. Black Nut wood is quite soft compared to white oak, but also less dense and therefore less heavy. It has a fine figure, lively grain and a dark brown tone.
Cherry wood has been very popular during Biedermeier but we predict that there will be a major revival. It is one of the toughest hardwoods around and has a very expressive figure – our Viennese mahogany! It’s color ranges from darkish yellow to reddish-brown. The wood tends to darken with use. We highly recommend it for our tables and our „Shadow“ side board of course. A furniture piece made out of cherry wood will last for many generations.
Larch wood has a light and small splint wood. The heartwood has very lively colors ranging from lightly brown to intensely reddish brown which also darkens significantly during use. It’s annual growth rings are very poignant which gives the surface a very expressive figure. Larch wood is often used for outdoor furniture, as it is not that sensitive to moisture. Without treatment the wood quickly changes its color to a silverish grey if kept outside.
